Talladega 2012.

Well, first off - WE FINALLY GOT SOME WRECKS, GUYS. I know that’s not what racing is about; but I mean we’ve had quite the dry spell, wouldn’t you say? But, we all expected that.. it IS Talladega. Still, it was nice to see some wrecks.

The two things that really stuck out to me today were Kurt Busch’s role playing (of course), and Brad Keselowski’s move on the last lap.

Kurt Busch, or should I say, Ricky Bobby -

Tell you the truth, I was solely impressed by Kurt’s paint scheme this weekend. As if that wasn’t enough, he actually ran the race with a stuffed cougar in the car. Throughout the race, FOX was playing audio clips from Kurt’s transmission, and it kept me thoroughly entertained. I have to say, Kurt and his team’s role playing was quite impressive. But not only did he act like Ricky Bobby, he DROVE like Ricky Bobby! After spinning towards the end of the race, Kurt Busch legitimately drove the wrong way down pit road, which reminded all of us about Ricky Bobby winning the race while driving backwards in Talladega Nights. After moving to Phoenix Racing, Kurt said that he hoped to have fun this year. I don’t know if he had fun, but I certainly had fun watching him today!

Brad Keselowski’s last lap move -

Brad admitted to having his last lap move all planned out during his victory lane interview, and wow.. he executed that perfectly. Kyle, in his pre-race interview, said that he hoped to be the car pushing for the win on the last lap, and that’s exactly where he was. That didn’t work so well, though. Pushing the lead car to the line on the last lap is the ideal position, or at least it was until today. In my opinion, the era of the second place car slingshotting around the leader as they come to the start finish line has officially come to an end. Drivers will review Keselowski’s ingenious move from today and try to master it themselves, making it a priority to be leading the tandem on the last lap. There will be too much anticipation of the driver in front pulling a Keselowski and disconnecting from you, as long as the pack is far enough behind to not catch you. All I have to say is, that was a wonderfully executed move.. and Brad deserved to win that one, he wowed us all!
